Christine Vasilev’s Speech at the Port Washington Education Foundation (PWEF) Award Ceremony

PWEF Awards – Christine Vasilev

October 16, 2014

Once again, we are gathered to celebrate a wonderful convergence of innovation, creativity and generosity!  That is what characterizes these grants!  More importantly, at a time when it would be tempting to believe that we are surrounded by terrible forces beyond our control, this small ceremony is a testimony to what Abraham Lincoln referred to, in his first inaugural address as “the better angels of our nature.”  A little trivia…Charles Dickens had used the phrase “our better angels” in his novel “Barnaby Rudge.”  Lincoln may have been inspired by that, or by Shakespeare’s reference to the “better angel” in Othello.  What is important is that, throughout history, especially during times of crisis, it is the triumph of “the better angels” that gives us all hope.

The people who took the time to fill out grant applications (funded or not) were motivated by love… love of teaching, love of learning, love of their subject, love of quality education in this community, love of their students.

The people who have given so generously over the years in time, effort and money are motivated by love…love for the public schools, love of intelligence and creativity, love of the children of this community.

That kind of love brings out the best in everyone.  That kind of love counters what appear to be forces of evil in the world.  That kind of love brings out “the better angels of our nature.”

Thank you all for being part of this positive and powerful effort.  The parents, educators, students, Port Washington community and the world benefit from it.
